The 'Tuna King' is a prominent face at the yearly bidding war.

A bulky bluefin tuna created waves at the Toyosu fish market this Monday, garnering a unprecedented bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2 million; £2.4m) during the venue's inaugural auction of the new year.

The top bid for the 535-pound fish came from the parent firm of a popular sushi restaurant group, which runs restaurants domestically and internationally.

"The year's tuna signals a prosperous start," remarked the entrepreneur, a notable figure at the annual new year's auction.

Known as the Tuna Tycoon, this entrepreneur is renowned for placing substantial bids for bluefin tuna at these high-profile January auctions.

Auction Shock and Record-Setting Precedent

Following the auction, the winner told journalists that he was "taken aback at the winning bid," stating, "I believed we would be able to purchase it a little for less, but the price escalated rapidly."

This new purchase tops his own record purchases:

  • He secured a tuna for 56.5 million yen back in 2012.
  • He paid 155 million yen in 2013.
  • In 2019, he purchased a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1 million).

Even after previously remarking that he thought he "overdid it," he has now gone on to break his own record yet again.

An Annual Spectacle of Exorbitant Bids

The inaugural auction at the Tokyo fish market is notoriously characterized by exorbitant prices. In the prior year, the first tuna was purchased for 207 million yen by a different food company, which stated the fish would be available at its restaurants across Japan.

The intense activity at the fish market during these pre-dawn auctions has evolved into a must-see spectacle in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which started around 05:00 local time, was no different.

Swift Service

The record-priced tuna was shortly thereafter prepared for customers at the bidder's sushi chains soon after the auction concluded.

"I believe like I've started the year in a auspicious way after eating something so fortune-bringing as the year gets underway," shared one satisfied diner.
