Hamilton Island, a Iconic Tropical Getaway on the World Heritage Reef, Reportedly Sold by US Investment Giant.
A major resort island located on the Great Barrier Reef has entered into an agreement for sale to a US-based investment group for a sum reportedly valued at 1.2 billion Australian dollars.
“We are honored to build on the legacy and commitment that the Oatley family has built in the heart of the iconic Great Barrier Reef,” said a company executive.
The Reported Sale
Headquartered in New York, Blackstone – the owner of the hospitality group Crown Resorts – confirmed it had signed an deal to purchase the Hamilton Island resort from the Oatley family, pending standard approvals from regulators.
The sellers issued a comment noting they were pleased with the new owners of an island that holds a “special place in the affections of many Australians” and is referred to as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
Hamilton Island's Scale and Features
Located roughly 900 kilometers north of Brisbane and approximately 500 kilometers south of Cairns, the island covers more than 1,130 hectares across two islands.
Roughly thirty percent of the area is developed, featuring a substantial range of amenities:
- Five separate hotels
- Over twenty restaurants and bars
- 20 retail outlets
- An 18-hole championship golf course on neighboring Dent Island
- A marina and a functioning airport
Hamilton Island is described as a major job provider in the Whitsunday region, supporting a sizable resident community and workforce, as well as a wide network of local partners, vendors, and local businesses.
A Look Back at The Island's History
The late Robert Oatley, a renowned yachtsman and winemaker, first bought the resort for $200 million in the year 2003 after spotting the island from aboard a yacht while sailing through the Whitsunday passage.
Hamilton's major development phase first began in the 1980s. In the decades before that, it was home to galvanised iron huts and more humble quarters that hosted Australian vacationers from the outback and southern states.
The Buyer's Other Holdings and Regional Background
The acquiring firm has ownership of hotels and luxury resorts in several nations, such as Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The area is the ancestral territory of the Ngaro Indigenous people. Its name comes from Captain James Cook, who sailed the HMS Endeavour through the island group on June 3, 1770, which was Whit Sunday.
