'Trapped in a Dreadful Dream': Relatives of Missing Teenagers Await Information After Ski Resort Fire
The loved ones of teenagers lost after a devastating fire at a venue in a Switzerland's alpine town are facing an agonising wait for answers and appealing for any details about their loved ones publicly.
The blaze engulfed the a popular bar in Cans-Montana, located in the mountains of south-west Switzerland, in the small hours of the first day of the year. Verified images depict the roof structure igniting as beverages with fireworks are held aloft.
Officials have indicated that it could take considerable time to formally name the those who perished of the fire, which killed numerous partygoers and injured another 119. Officials noted on Friday that 113 of the those hurt have been accounted for, with the process continuing to name the other six.
In the interim, relatives have been posting on the internet to appeal for clues about their missing relatives who were at the bar that night.
Desperate Searches for the Unaccounted For
The fate of teenager from Switzerland Arthur Brodard, a teenager, are not yet determined, according to an heartfelt request from his family.
The resident of a town near Lausanne, informed a local newspaper that she had gone back to the city to check whether he was in the hospital, while his father did the equivalent search in Bern, but was unsuccessful.
"I'm living a nightmare, a horror. Either I find my son in the morgue, or I find him in intensive care. Words cannot describe it," she said.
She continued that some of his friends had been located with burns covering nearly half their bodies. "There are no words; they endured hell."
The Italy's foreign ministry has indicated that a number of of its nationals are still unaccounted for.
Included in that group is Emanuele Galeppini, a teenage promising athlete, who hailed from Genoa but now living in the UAE.
The national sporting body has stated that he is no longer with us, without mentioning the tragedy, paying tribute to a "young athlete who represented dedication and authentic values."
His parent, told media that his son was at the bar and was last in contact around the new year. An official spokesperson has stated that a formal confirmation of his death is still pending.
Other Cases
Giovanni Tamburi, sixteen, is also among the missing. His parent said that he had been on holiday but had ventured out with a group and found himself at the venue.
"A companion informed me they ran away after the fire started and that he had his mobile with him, but then at a certain point he lost sight of him," she said, adding he had been wearing a identifiable gold chain.
One of his teachers stated, "He was known for his good nature and positive demeanor, alongside great maturity. He would frequently offer to get me a coffee."
Alice Kallergis, who holds dual Greek and Swiss citizenship but lives permanently in the country, was also at the bar on that night, according to reports.
Her brother has posted an appeal online, saying the relatives has had "no news" regarding the teenager or the group she was with, who are also reported missing.
Officials from her country of origin say they are closely watching the developments.
